Boiler company strategy in British Columbia

BC has one of the stronger boiler markets in Canada, especially around Vancouver, and most of it runs on natural gas. Owners here compete on combi conversions, condensing replacements and service depth.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

British Columbia gives a boiler specialist more room than most provinces. Boilers are more common here than the national average, the Vancouver region is denser still, and the large majority of boiler homes run on natural gas. The strategic questions for a BC owner are about where to focus within a very varied province, and how to stand apart from full-line HVAC companies that also advertise "boilers".

How big the BC boiler market is

According to Statistics Canada's heating systems table, about 9% of BC households reported a hot-water or steam boiler as their primary heating system in 2023. In the Vancouver census metropolitan area, the figure was roughly 12%, among the highest of the large cities in the table.

Natural gas fuelled about 64% of BC's boiler homes. That makes gas condensing boilers and combis the centre of the market, and annual combustion servicing the natural base for recurring revenue. For an owner, the first question is not whether the demand exists but which part of it you want: older multi-zone homes, combi conversions in townhouses, or radiant systems in newer custom builds.

Coast versus Interior and North

Climate splits BC in two. The southwest coast has mild, wet winters, while the Interior and the North face longer and much colder heating seasons. Those differences change your calendar and your emergency exposure:

  • On the coast, the heating season is long but gentle. No-heat calls spread out, and spring and summer servicing is easier to sell.
  • In the Interior and the North, cold snaps produce sharp spikes in emergency demand, and travel between towns eats technician hours.

A company planning to expand from the Lower Mainland into the Okanagan, for example, should model a different emergency load and a different drive-time cost, not just copy its current offer. The demand mapping service does that comparison.

The regulator to know

Technical Safety BC is the safety authority for boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems, as well as gas and electrical technologies. Licensing, permits and technical rules are its business. We don't advise on compliance; if a strategy question turns into a regulatory one, we'll point you back to Technical Safety BC.

Programs and the heat pump question

As of October 2026, a federal heat pump rebate had been announced by the Government of Canada for electric cold-climate air-source heat pumps, with no launch date published at the time of writing.

For a boiler company, the point isn't to fight that. It's to decide what you'll say when a boiler customer asks about switching: whether you'll offer hybrid systems, refer the work out, or focus your marketing on customers who intend to stay with hydronic heat. Confirm program details with each administrator before quoting them.

Lessons from GasBoilers.ca

GasBoilers.ca is a gas-boiler division Ali built for CANRO Heat. Its coverage now reaches 26+ BC communities, and homeowners have given it 5.0★ from 76+ Google reviews. Two things from that project apply to most BC owners:

  1. Separate the boiler offer from the general HVAC offer. A dedicated division with its own pages and service area reads as a specialist, not as one line among many.
  2. Map communities deliberately. Covering 26+ communities worked because each was chosen and served, not because every postal code was listed.

The results page explains what transfers to a company that isn't building a separate division.

How we'd approach a BC boiler company

We'd start with your job history by community, compare it with the regional boiler share, and look at where your techs actually spend their drive time. Then we'd sharpen your positioning against the full-line shops in your area and test whether your maintenance pricing covers coast-versus-Interior travel. If you want the marketing carried out afterwards, that runs through HVAC.Agency under a separate plan. To begin, contact Ali.

Frequently asked questions

Is BC a good market for a boiler specialist?

On the public numbers, yes. About 9% of BC households heated mainly with a boiler in 2023, above the national 7%, and the Vancouver area was near 12%. Whether it suits your company depends on your service area and your team.

Who regulates boiler work in BC?

Technical Safety BC covers boilers, pressure vessels and refrigeration systems, along with gas and electrical. We point you there; we don't give compliance advice.

Did the GasBoilers.ca project happen in BC?

Yes. GasBoilers.ca is a gas-boiler division Ali built for CANRO Heat, serving 26+ BC communities, with 5.0★ from 76+ Google reviews.

Should a BC boiler company worry about heat pump rebates?

Plan for them rather than worry. A federal heat pump rebate was announced in October 2026 and hadn't opened as of this writing. Some boiler customers will consider switching, which makes a clear position on hybrid and replacement options more important.
